Pebbled and saffiano are two of the most common finishes on everyday designer bags, and they behave very differently once you start carrying them. Both are usually made from cowhide or calfskin; the difference is what happens to the surface. Here is how to tell them apart, and which one suits the way you live.
What pebbled leather is
Pebbled leather has a raised, rounded grain that looks a little like a path of small stones. On some hides the grain is natural and brought out by tumbling the leather in a drum; on others it is pressed into the surface with a textured plate. Either way, the result is soft to the touch and slightly matte.
The pattern is forgiving. Small scratches and scuffs sink into the grain instead of catching the light, and the leather relaxes with use, so a pebbled bag slouches a little more after a few years than it did on day one.
What saffiano leather is
Saffiano leather has a fine cross-hatched pattern pressed into the surface under heat, then sealed with a wax or coating. The finish is firm, a little glossy and very even in color.
That coating makes saffiano hard-wearing. It resists light scratches, shrugs off drizzle and wipes clean with a damp cloth. The same stiffness means it holds a crisp, structured shape, which is why it turns up so often on satchels, work totes and wallets. The trade-off is that when saffiano does take a deep scratch or a crease, it is harder to hide, and it doesn’t develop the soft patina of uncoated leather.

Which one should you choose?
Choose saffiano if you want a bag that looks the same in two years as it does today, if you carry it through rain and crowded commutes, or if you like a crisp, structured shape. It is a practical pick for work totes, satchels and wallets that are handled all day.
Choose pebbled if you like leather that feels soft and relaxed, and you would rather small marks blend in than stand out. It suits crossbodies, shoulder bags and hobos that are meant to move with you.
Caring for each
- Pebbled: wipe with a soft, dry cloth, blot rain rather than rubbing it, and use a neutral leather conditioner once or twice a year.
- Saffiano: wipe with a slightly damp cloth and dry it straight away. Skip conditioner, which can’t soak through the coating and leaves a film. Don’t overstuff it, because creases in a coated finish stay.
