How to choose a crossbody for your frame

Strap drop, width and what you carry decide whether a crossbody sits at your hip or bumps against your thigh. Here is how to measure once and shop with confidence.

A crossbody is the most hands-free bag you can own, but only if it sits where it should. Too long and it bumps against your thigh with every step; too short and it rides up under your arm. A few measurements, taken once, will tell you which bags are worth a closer look.

Start with the strap drop

Strap drop is the distance from the top of the strap, pulled straight, down to the top edge of the bag. It decides where the bag lands, so it matters more than the size of the bag itself. To find your number, put on a bag you already like, adjust it until it sits where you want, and measure from the top of your shoulder to the top of the bag.

As a rough guide, most people between 5′2″ and 5′8″ are comfortable with a drop of 20 to 23 inches. If you are petite, look for a strap that adjusts down to 19 inches or less. If you are tall, or you often wear the bag over a coat, look for at least 24 inches at the longest setting.

Match the bag to your frame

Proportion does most of the work. A bag about as wide as your hand span, roughly 8 to 9 inches, looks balanced on most frames. On a petite frame, a mini or small bag keeps the eye moving instead of stopping at the hip. On a taller or broader frame, a very small bag can look lost, and a medium crossbody of 10 inches or so is usually the better match.

Depth matters too. A slim bag, 2 to 3 inches deep, lies flat against the body and disappears under a jacket. A boxy camera bag stands out more, which is part of its appeal.

Decide what it needs to carry

Empty your current bag and look at what you actually use. A phone, a card case and keys fit in almost any crossbody. Add sunglasses and a compact wallet and you need a small bag, roughly 7 to 9½ inches wide. A water bottle or a tablet means medium or larger. Every product page here has a What fits list checked against that bag’s measurements, so you can match your list to the bag instead of guessing.

Check the strap and the closure

  • Adjustable or fixed. An adjustable strap lets you shorten the bag in crowds and lengthen it over a coat. A fixed strap is simpler, but only if its length already suits you.
  • Strap width. A wider strap, around 1½ inches, spreads the weight better than a thin chain once the bag is full.
  • Zip or flap. A zip top is the most secure choice for travel and busy streets. A flap is quicker to open with one hand.
  • Detachable. A strap that clips off lets you carry the same bag as a clutch, or swap in a different strap.

A two-minute test at home

When your bag arrives, load it with what you usually carry before you judge it. Walk a lap of the room, then sit down: the bag should rest in your lap or at your side without the strap pulling across your neck. Check that you can reach inside without lifting the strap over your head. If it doesn’t work for you, you have 30 days to send it back unused.
